Notes from Underground

Fyodor Dostoevsky

Considered by many to be the first existentialist novel, Notes from the Underground follows a retired civil servant in St Petersburg who retreats from society. Dostoevsky reflects on the need to establish one's true identity and how society can distort the perception of it. The work influenced Metamorphosis and Invisible Man.
